What Are Tomodachi Life Personalities?

In Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, every Mii is assigned one of 16 personality types based on four slider rows you set during creation. These personalities determine how your Mii walks, talks, reacts to events, and interacts with other islanders.

The four rows are Movement (Slow → Quick), Speech (Polite → Direct), Energy (Flat → Intense), and Attitude (Serious → Relaxed). Each row has 8 positions. A fifth row, Overall, has no effecton personality — it's purely cosmetic.

How the calculation works

  1. The game adds Movement + Speech to get a horizontal value (0–15).
  2. It adds Energy + Attitude to get a vertical value (0–15).
  3. It divides each total by 4 (rounding down) to get a column and row on a 4×4 chart.
  4. The intersection gives your Mii's personality type.

Important detail: Speech and Attitude skip the value 4 — their 8 positions map to 0,1,2,3,5,6,7,8 instead of 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7. This means their right-side positions contribute slightly more to the total than Movement and Energy.

💡 Want to skip the math? Use our Mii personality calculator to get instant results from your slider values.

How Personality Types Affect Gameplay in Tomodachi Life

Your Mii's personality group (the broad category) has a bigger visible impact than their specific sub-type. Here's what changes based on personality group in Living the Dream:

GroupClothes ColorHouse ExteriorIdle Animation
ConsiderateYellows and pastel orangesWarm yellows and creamsArms spread wide, slowly bouncing side to side
OutgoingPinks, reds, and orangesWarm pinks and redsJumps in place, whips head and body around excitedly
ReservedCool greens and tealsCool greens and sage tonesStands stiffly with arms folded, glances left and right
AmbitiousCyans, blues, and purplesCool blues and purplesLooks toward personality description, gives self-assured nods

In Living the Dream, the broad group behavior quirks from the 3DS game have been replaced by Little Quirksfrom the Wishing Fountain. These can be gifted to any Mii regardless of their personality group, meaning two Miis with the same personality can behave quite differently depending on which quirks you've given them.

Best Personality Combinations

Miis with personalities in the same group tend to get along well and become friends more easily. If you want a harmonious island, try pairing Miis within the same group. If you want more drama and interesting interactions, mix different groups.

Recommended pairings for strong friendships

  • Outgoing + Considerate— The outgoing Mii's energy is balanced by the considerate Mii's warmth.
  • Ambitious + Reserved— Both are analytical and respect each other's independence.
  • Same group pairings — Two Considerate Miis or two Outgoing Miis will bond quickly over shared traits.

Note: The in-game Compatibility Tester also factors in birthdays and zodiac signs, so personality is only part of the equation. Two Miis with the same personality aren't guaranteed to be best friends.
